Canadian Cuisine
If you’re not from Canada, or from Edmonton, you might want to try these local options. As one of the fastest growing cities in Canada, the people and culture of the new residents also comes with amazing variety of delicious food.
Poutine
Consisting of French fries with gravy (or poutine sauce) and cheese curds traditionally, poutine can vary widely!
In Edmonton good places to get some include La Poutine but you can probably find this in many locations.
Green Onion Cakes
While some think that these are a Chinese delight, these are actually pretty unique to the Edmonton area and are a staple of the summer Festival season where you can find them for sale at food trucks. The most well-known place to get these is Green Onion Cake Man but many places sell them including Catch of the Week!
Nanaimo Bars
If you think of Canadian desserts, Nanaimo Bars and Butter Tarts often come to mind. Even the Costco Nanaimo bars are delicious.
Donairs
While many people might be familiar with this style of street food, the variety often found in Edmonton might differ from what you might know best. High Voltage is one of the many restaurants that serve good donairs.
Favourite Restaurants
Eat here at some of our preferred spots: see below or look at Ali’s Yelp reviews.
Chinese Hot Pot Buffet
If you’re already familiar with Hot Pot, you won’t be disappointed! This is a hit with our family with options to satisfy nearly anyone. Located in a former Bonanza restaurant, the buffet options are vast and you can choose exactly what you want.
The Melting Pot
The only Canadian location of this chain of fondue restaurants, The Melting Pot is quite indulgent but a super fun location for a meal out with friends or family.
Pampa
We really like the Brazillian food available at Pampa. So many cuts of meat brought to your table (or if you don’t actually want that much meat, you can get a smaller portion at lunch and take advantage of the buffet of great sides.
Doughnut Party
Canadians eat more donuts per capita than anyone else in the world. And while some folks think that is all because of Tim Hortons, we also like good quality donuts. And Doughnut Party is a prime example of quality with delightfully delicious ones.
Boston Pizza
Named for a Greek man living in Canada, this family restaurant chain originated in Edmonton. A frequent haunt ever since Ali was a child, this place is a hit for kids and families and adults alike, with an expansive menu of options
Shogun Fusion
Long one of Ali’s favourite Edmonton-area Japanese restaurants even before they added Vietnamese food and All-You-Can-Eat menus, this place has the right combination of quality and quantity for a great meal out.
The Duchess Bake Shop
This French bakery/cafe has had huge success over the last 15 years. They have such great baked goods that it is hard to choose what to order! They also sell fancy provisions and cookbooks if you want to try to make quality food at home.
MEAT
Do you want some delicious southern style food? Brisket, pulled pork, burnt ends, ribs, smoked chicken, fried chicken… the options abound. The other restaurants in their restaurant family are also quite tasty, especially The NEXT act.
Swiss Chalet
When Kai wanted to go out for his birthday he chose here. Exceedingly kid-friendly, this Canadian chain of restaurants specializes in chicken
Padmanadi
Many in Edmonton say that Padmanadi has the best vegan food they’ve ever had… Ali’s favourite dish here is their curry mutton. An Edmonton staple known for community-mindedness, delicious food, and friendly owner.
Remedy Cafe
Jon and Ali met for their first date at the Jasper Ave one. Not only do they have great chai options but their food is lovely too (Ali loves their chana masala wrap and Kashmiri chai). A perfect first date location. Remedy has locations all across town.
Costco
The food court has been a huge winner during our weekly grocery trips here. Honestly you can’t go wrong with poutine or inexpensive pizza or the hot dog deal. They even have fresh cookies nowadays.
Pyro
Another eating spot attached to a grocery purchasing location, but this place really satisfies the need for meat. And the kid loved the pizza when we last visited.
Dorinku Osaka
This might be one of the more delicious and more frequently visited Japanese restaurants for Ali due to the proximity to work. The high quality food at it and its sister location Dorinku Tokyo really satisfy the tastebuds.
Syphay
One of the restaurant mainstays when Jon worked for BioWare, Syphay offers great Thai/Laotian food. Eating in is great as is getting takeout or delivery.
Bistro Praha
Since 1977 this Czech restaurant has served the Edmonton community including hockey greats. They’re most well-known for their weiner schnitzel but Ali likes to rave about just how great their Butter Crepe a’ lat Frantisek is.
